Municipal Waste

Municipal solid waste (MSW) is the most common form of waste throughout the world. Common household garbage, refuse or MSW has become an ever increasing problem throughout the world despite recycling efforts to help remove and reuse recyclables from municipal waste streams.

In waste to energy facilities, recyclables are pulled out and recycled. Aggregates like stone, concrete, dirt, and low energy value materials are also be pulled out. The waste material that remains is often referred to as “fuel”. This fuel is incinerated, gasified or otherwise handled through variety of other processes that turn it into heat energy. The heat energy is utilized in a variety of methods to create new fuels, steam and electricity.

Combustion – Incineration VS. Gasification

Combustion is the total burning and oxidation of carbon, hydrogen and other elements, which releases heat, thermal energy and exhaust fumes. Combustion produces higher concentration of pollutant gasses such as SOx and NOx than gasification. Exhaust fumes and gases from the incineration process should be filtered and cleaned before entering the atmosphere.

Gasification is a much cleaner process than combustion – incineration. With gasification, the fuel (feed stock) is first converted to a clean-burning gas (Syngas) at high temperatures in a low oxygen environment. This gas can be used as a clean burning fuel (similar to Natural gas or Propane) or converted to useful chemicals such as ammonia and fuel oils.

New methods of Gasification and Arc Technologies are now tried, proven and commercially available! The down sides are a limited number of manufactures and the cost and expense factors.
